The origination of the Ukrainian technical sciences in the fields of mechanics, theory of reliability, applied chemistry, aviation, nuclear physics, cryogenics, electric and heat power engineering, as well as tractor, automobile and diesel locomotive production are all connected with the University.

The University has trained more than 150 thousand engineers during the years of its existence. 22 University graduates have become correspondents and full members of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, about 110 scientists of the University have been awarded State prizes.

Currently, more than 26 thousand students are trained; there are 430 postgraduates, and 1700 teachers and scientists among which 190 Doctors of Sciences and Professors and more than 800 candidates of sciences and associate professors. The University prepares specialists in the field of machine-building, automation, electrical engineering, electronics, chemical engineering, control systems, high physical and microprocessor technologies, psychology, economics of enterprises, business, etc. under 96 specialties.

Kharkiv Polytechnic offers the highest amount of the licensed admission for the students in the southeastern Ukraine; it can admit more than 4.500 full time students and 4000 students who have tuition by correspondence.

NTU «KhPI» is the only one higher education institution that prepares specialists for such important branches of machine-building as turbine construction for atomic, thermoelectric and hydraulic power stations, heavy electro-machine engineering, tractor building, internal combustion engine control systems, boiler and reactor building, food fat technologies and fat substitution technologies, tank building, electro-insulating and cable and condenser engineering.

Since 1991 NTU «KhPI» has been providing individual curricula for intensive and specialized training in mathematical, informational, economical and ecological disciplines, including the humanities, The University trains specialists in three qualification levels. The first level is a four-year training for the Bachelor’s Degree, the second and the third levels are supposed to take 5.5 year trainings for Engineer’s Degree or Master’s Degree (6 years). The contemporary policy of the Ministry of education and science of Ukraine is oriented at ensuring active participation of our country in Bologna process.

The representatives of our University participated in all the arrangements that have been held by the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine starting from November 2003. Special attention should be paid to the Ukrainian Rectors Conference of the Higher Education Technical Institutions that was devoted to «Higher Technical Education of Ukraine and Bologna Process». It was held at NTU «KhPI» (17 -18 March, 2004). The Appeal signed by the rectors – participants of the Conference - called the University Society, legislators and officials of Ukraine to the clear understanding of the fundamental ideas of Magna Charter Universitatum to make the fundamental principals declared in this document as the basis for the activity of the whole system of the higher education in Ukraine. During the last years the scientists of NTU «KhPI» were awarded 9 State Prizes in the field of science, engineering and architecture as well as the Lebedyev Prize of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine. 20 honored workers of science, engineering and higher education, 21 State Prize winners, 29 academicians and corresponding members of the National Academy of Sciences and specialized branches of the National Academy of Sciences work at the University.

The unique experimental complex of the Research and Design Institute «Molniya», the observatory of the institute of Ionosphere and Research complex that studies gas-dynamic and thermalphysic processes in turbomachines of the turbine construction department of the university has been recognized by the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine as a national heritage site.

The northeastern Regional Center of the Scientific and Educational Computer Network of Ukraine (URAN) was set up at NTU «KhPI» by the joint decision of the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine and the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine.
