Scientists of NTU «KhPI» were trained at a German university under the European Eurizon program

Young scientists of the Department of Electrical Machines of NTU «KhPI» – Head of the Department Andrii Yehorov and Associate Professor Oleksii Duniev – completed a research internship at the Otto-von-Guericke University of Magdeburg (Germany) under the European Eurizon Staff Exchange program. They took part in meetings, seminars, joint research, and the development of research projects. With their foreign colleagues, scientists of NTU «KhPI» exchanged scientific knowledge and experience in the field of energy, in particular wave energy, and research on new types of electric machines. An important decision was made to prepare and submit two joint German-Ukrainian grant applications aimed at developing Ukraine’s energy independence. The visit of Kharkiv Polytechnic to the German university was made possible by a prestigious grant from the European Eurizon scholarship program for Ukrainian researchers.

Associate Professor Andrii Yehorov, Head of the Department of Electric Machines at the Educational and Scientific Institute of Energy, Electronics and Electromechanics of NTU «KhPI», and Associate Professor Oleksii Duniev, Associate Professor of the same department, completed a two-week internship at the Otto von Guericke University of Magdeburg (Germany) under the European Eurizon Staff Exchange program. This trip was made possible by a prestigious grant from the European Eurizon Fellowship Program «Remote Research Grants for Ukrainian Researchers» won by the scientists in 2024. Throughout the year, the participants of this project: associate professors of the Department of Electrical Machines of NTU «KhPI» Andrii Yehorov, Andrii Maslennikov, and Oleksii Dunev (project manager), conducted research on the development of linear generators for converting the energy of sea waves.

The main goals of the visit of young scientists from Kharkiv Polytechnic Institute were to strengthen international cooperation between NTU «Kharkiv Polytechnic Institute» and Otto-von-Guericke University of Magdeburg. Scientists of Kharkiv Polytechnic took part in seminars and meetings, joint research and development of scientific projects, exchanged knowledge and experience in the field of energy, in particular wave energy, and research of new types of electric machines with foreign colleagues. They also got acquainted with research laboratories and their modern equipment used to test electric machines and their control systems. Seminars discussing the results and conclusions of joint research under the Eurizon program and laboratory work conducted by professors of the Department of Electric Drive Systems at the University of Magdeburg were also useful and fruitful.

Scientists of the Kharkiv Polytechnic Institute showed great interest in the state-of-the-art research laboratory «Central for Method Development» with advanced technologies for measuring and testing high-torque and high-speed electric machines. The young scientists of Kharkiv Polytechnic received new knowledge in the field of control methods at a seminar on programming microcontrollers for controlling DC motors.

An important event of the visit became the preparation and submission of two joint German-Ukrainian grant applications aimed at developing Ukraine’s energy independence. These are: «Linear Generator Design for Highly-Efficient Wave Energy Converters» for the call for proposals for German-Ukrainian Research Cooperation for Sustainable Reconstruction (BMBF) and «Improving the efficiency of transversal flux machine by reducing its parasitic magnetic forces» for participation in the IEEE «Magnetism for Ukraine 2024/25 program».

According to the scientists of NTU «KhPI», the Eurizon Staff Exchange program inspired them to further develop international relations, exchange knowledge and implement modern approaches in the field of electromechanics. Such cooperation opens up prospects for new research and advanced training of Ukrainian specialists. Andrii Yegorov, Oleksii Duniev and Andrii Maslennikov express their gratitude to their colleagues from the Department of Electric Drive Systems at the University of Magdeburg for their support and fruitful cooperation within the Eurizon Staff Exchange program; as well as to the representatives of the Eurizon exchange program, which facilitates new stages of international partnership.

Note:

The internship of NTU «KhPI» scientists at the Otto-von-Guericke University of Magdeburg (Germany) took place from 22 January  to 8 February, 2025. The Eurizon Grant Program is funded by the European Union as part of the Horizon Europe research and innovation program.

The Eurizon Fellowship Program «Remote Research Grants for Ukrainian Researchers» is aimed at supporting Ukrainian researchers who, despite russia’s war against Ukraine, will be able to continue their work remotely in cooperation with partners from European institutions. Projects can be carried out remotely from any region of Ukraine.
