Every year, NTU «KhPI» joins the UNESCO World Initiative to celebrate the International Day of Light with dignity. This year, the celebration took on a special dimension: for the first time, it was held simultaneously offline at the Kharkiv Scientific Lyceum-Boarding School «Obladovanist» and online, attracting everyone from all over the country. The event attracted more than 200 people! Participants explored the properties of light, watched vivid laser beam demonstrations, participated in live discussions with young scientists from NTU «KhPI» and created their own optical devices during experimental workshops. At the same time, hundreds of science enthusiasts got acquainted with the history of the development of communication systems, plunged into the first experiments with light in the XVII century and the discovery of dyes and phosphors that gave mankind bright colors.
The most active young scientists and their mentors gathered in the lyceum «Obladovanist». Note:
International Day of Light has been celebrated every year since the first successful test of a laser. The laser is a great example of how a scientific discovery can bring revolutionary benefits to society in engineering, communications, healthcare, and many other fields.
The broad theme of light allows us to connect many different sectors of society around the world and demonstrate how science, technology, arts and culture can help achieve UNESCO’s goals of universal education, equality and peace. Today, more than ever, this global initiative is important.
NTU «KhPI» has been participating in the celebration and holding of the Day of Light science festivals since 2018 with the support of the following organizations: UNESCO, SPIE, the international society for optics and photonics. Kseniia Minakova, a young scientist at NTU «KhPI» and co-organizer of the events, is a representative of UNESCO, namely its National Center in Ukraine.
