The National Technical University «Kharkiv Polytechnic Institute» has been ranked first among Ukrainian universities in the most respected world ranking of scientific achievements of research institutions Nature Index in the category «Earth & environmental sciences». This result was achieved thanks to a recent scientific publication of the team of the Research Institute of the Ionosphere of NTU «KhPI» in one of the most authoritative journals in this field of knowledge, Geophysical Research Letters. «To be included in the Nature Index is a great honor for any university in the world. And to lead the national ranking in a large field of knowledge is a real dream,» note the scientists of NTU «KhPI».
According to one of the authors of the scientific article, Dmytro Kotov, PhD in Physics and Mathematics, Director of the Research Institute of the Ionosphere of NTU «KhPI», there are no more strict experts in the world than the independent Nature Index group: «They reject 99.5% of the journals included in Scopus and build their rating by analyzing only those publications that reflect the highest level of scientific achievement.» «It is a great honor for any university in the world to be included in the Nature Index,» says Dmytro Kotov, «and to lead the national ranking in a major field of knowledge is a real dream. In February 2025, the website of NTU «KhPI» published a publication that an international team of researchers led by scientists from the Institute of Ionosphere of NTU «KhPI» discovered a problem with atmospheric forecasting that could lead to the loss of spacecraft in low Earth orbit. The results of the scientific work were published in one of the most influential publications in the world about the Earth and its shells – the journal of geophysical research Geophysical Research Letters (USA). The team of scientists from Kharkiv Polytechnic who joined the research included Dmytro Kotov, Director of the Institute of Ionosphere, PhD in Physics and Mathematics, Maryna Reznichenko, PhD in Philosophy, Oleksandr Bohomaz, PhD in Engineering, and Ihor Domnin, PhD in Engineering. They were joined by scientists from the University of Alabama at Huntsville (USA), the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (USA), the Space Research Center of the Polish Academy of Sciences, and the Radio Astronomy Institute of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine.
Nature Index is an index established by Nature magazine that analyzes the global distribution of scientific publications in top-tier journals. The latest update of the Nature Index includes 145 such journals, i.e. only 0.5% of the journals indexed in Scopus.
