The innovative laboratory for designing robots opens at NTU ‘KhPI’

The updated embedded laboratory for students’ project-based learning was presented at the Department of Computer Engineering and Programming of NTU ‘KhPI’. It’s fitted with specialized systems for designing robots and other smart devices on the Embedded Starter Kit board. About 700 students will be able to practise in the creation of smart systems over here (for example, they will get an opportunity to design a robotic arm or even an exoskeleton). The learning laboratory is also aimed to improve the teamwork skills of students. The project was implemented by NTU ‘KhPI’ in collaboration with the GlobalLogic IT-company.

Among the areas of study there are computer-controlled electronics, embedded systems, programming of microprocessors and microcontrollers, etc.

The laboratory was opened with the participation of the Rector of NTU ‘KhPI’ Yevgen Sokol, the Head of the Department of Computer Engineering and Programming Serhii Semenov, junior VP Engineering in GlobalLogic Viktor Matusov.

Yevgen Sokol noted, ‘Undoubtedly, the main goal of opening such a laboratory is to closely engage our students in the performance of real practical tasks. I would like to point out that everything related to embedded control systems is of captivating nature since it has a broad range of assignments and applications. And we’re working towards this direction at the Department of Computer Engineering and Programming of the NTU ‘KhPI’ with the support of GlobalLogic. The use of the provided technology is the exact real achievement that will provide our students with an opportunity to acquire good modern education. We are extremely grateful to GlobalLogic, which considers the departments of NTU ‘KhPI’ as a basis for preparing excellent experts. And most importantly, the company realises the need for business and education to work jointly. I have no doubt that we will further continue to cooperate.’

The Head of the Department of Computer Engineering and Programming Serhii Semenov stressed that with the help of the new laboratory the educational process and scientific research with a focus on robotic embedded systems will be organised.

Serhii Semenov said, ‘We have received about twenty Embedded Starter Kit devices from the company, which allow us to carry out studies, base an educational process taking into account intelligent embedded systems and write a code with its help. In the meantime, we are launching a class where students will be able to study new subjects that are unique for universities and the educational process (embedded systems). Students also will be able to improve their knowledge in electronics and systems engineering. These systems are unique in the sense that with their help it’s possible to code, create various robotic systems and devices for many branches of the economy.’

The representative of GlobalLogic, junior VP Engineering Viktor Matusov mentioned that the company is a strong supporter of higher education development and it has long-term strategic cooperation with NTU ‘KhPI’. He said, ‘We’re establishing the laboratory now – this is the physical infrastructure, as well as the hardware and software. This will allow future engineers to create a detailed understanding of the development of embedded systems and create unique devices. For example, a robotic arm or even an exoskeleton. As the NTU ‘KhPI’ graduate, I’m particularly pleased that it was the Kharkiv Polytechnic Institute that became one of the first places where we open such a laboratory since further development of the IT industry is impossible without the support aimed to educational institutions. We expect university graduates, as engineers, to participate in our projects, but it’s the university who should be left to carry out tuition. Therefore, we help by joining the updating of programs, helping to train personnel among teachers.’

Let us recall that NTU ‘KhPI’ and GlobalLogic concluded the cooperation agreement in January 2019.

Ref.:

Embedded system is a computer systema combination of a computer processor, computer memory, and input/output peripheral devicesthat has a dedicated function within a larger mechanical or electrical system.

GlobalLogic is an international software development company in the area of digital media, medicine, telecommunications, auto industry, etc. The company was founded in 2000. GlobalLogic is headquartered in San Jose, California, with development centers in Ukraine, India, USA, Europe, Argentina, Canada. GlobalLogic Ukraine is one of the largest software developers in Ukraine. It has offices and cooperates with over 4,500 specialists in Kyiv, Kharkiv, Lviv and Mykolaiv.

The group of companies GlobalLogic invested over $ 2 million in the development of engineering talent in the region of Central and Eastern Europe in 2019. A significant part of these investments accounts for Ukraine. Under the framework of the project of cooperation with universities, GlobalLogic Education, the company is a partner of 19 universities in different cities of Ukraine. It has launched 15 joint programs, including programs at NTU ‘KhPI’.
