Researchers from NTU «Kharkiv Polytechnic Institute» are participants in prestigious international conferences in Portugal

Scientists from NTU «KhPI» became the only participants from Ukraine at two influential international forums in Portugal: a conference on vibration problems and a conference on wave mechanics and oscillations. This year, more than 200 scientists from 50 countries joined the event with a common goal – to enrich various fields of engineering with theory and innovation. The research from NTU «Kharkiv Polytechnic University» was presented by Oleksiy Larin, director of the Institute of Computer Modeling, Applied Physics, and Mathematics, Tetyana Shmatko, professor in the Department of Higher Mathematics, and Yurii Mikhlin, professor in the Department of Applied Mathematics.

A team of scientists from the National Technical University «KhPI» was the only Ukrainian group at a prestigious scientific event in Lisbon (Portugal): the 16th International Conference on Vibration Problems and the 11th International Conference on Wave Mechanics and Oscillations. They presented their research on current trends in applied mechanics and the use of composite materials, particularly in the aviation, transport, and defense industries.

So, the topic of the report by Tetyana Shmatko, professor at the Department of Higher Mathematics of the Institute of Mechanical Engineering and Transport at NTU «KhPI,» was «Free vibration analysis of sandwich functionally graded shallow shells with auxetic honeycomb core resting on an elastic foundation». In addition, the director of the Institute of Computer Modeling, Applied Physics and Mathematics at NTU «KhPI», professor of the Department of Mathematical Modeling and Intelligent Computing in Engineering, corresponding member of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, Oleksiy Larin, gave a presentation entitled «Dynamics of the specialized vehicle with two level suspension under different kinds of external influence».  Yurii Mikhlin, Professor of the  Department of Applied Mathematics at the same institute, also presented his research paper «Vibrations of composite sandwich shells with flexible honeycomb core».

More than 200 scientists from 50 countries participated in the international conferences in Lisbon. The forum participants focused their activities on the development of vibration theory, vibration and wave mechanics, and the application of theoretical research in various fields of engineering.

The results presented by NTU «KhPI» scientists Yurii Mikhlin and Tetyana Shmatko are being implemented within the framework of NATO’s international project G6176 «Composite Metamaterials for Aerospace Structures – CoMetA» under the program «Science for Peace and Security (SPS)». Oleksiy Larin presented the achievements obtained within the framework of the National Research Fund of Ukraine project «Vibration protection of devices, equipment, cargo, and people from dynamic influences in extreme conditions based on the study of nonlinear vibrations of complex structures with controlled and passive elements.»

Note:

The 16th International Conference on Vibration Problems (ICOVP-2025) and the 11th International Conference on Wave Mechanics and Vibrations (WMVC-2025) were held jointly in Lisbon, Portugal, from 2 to 5 September, 2025. They were jointly organized by the Department of Civil Engineering of the School of Science and Technology of NOVA University Lisbon (DEC/NOVA FCT) and the Institute of Mechanical Engineering of the Higher Technical Institute of Lisbon University (IDMEC/IST/UL). The chair of the conference organizing committee is NOVA University professor Zuzana Dimitrovová. The conferences have been held since 1990 (ICOVP-2025) and 2001 (WMVC-2025).
