About Department

The Department of Intelligent Computer Systems (ICS) is one of the youngest departments of NTU “KhPI”. The department was established on February 12, 2007. The average age of lecturers in the department is 41 years. However, the leading scientists-lecturers and good traditions of the ICS department are known in Kharkiv and beyond.

The head of the department is Natalia V. Sharonova, Doctor of Technical Sciences, Full Professor. The fields of her scientific research are artificial intelligence, automated natural language processing, and computational linguistics. More than 20 PhD and 3 Doctors of Technical Sciences have defended their theses under her supervision. She is the author of about 200 scientific and methodical works.

The optimism and inexhaustible energy of the head of the department set an example of scientific research and love of life for all the members of the department.

Today the scientific and teaching staff of the department is 20, including 2 doctors of sciences, professors, 13 candidates of sciences, 5 senior lecturers, and 1 assistant. The support staff of the department consists of 5.

Today the Department has 6 classes for laboratory and practical lessons, 2 computer classes, and the laboratory “Elements of Artificial Intelligence in Engineering and Technology”.

The department conducts training for masters of Applied Linguistics (BA, MA).

The lecturers of the department have developed about 30 new lecture courses, and practical training programs, published 3 monographs, and over 100 scientific articles. Many of the articles are published in foreign journals, e.g. Poland, Bulgaria, Sweden, Germany, etc. The department is willing that all the lecture courses be based not only on the latest achievements of science, but own scientific research.

And it yields results. Its professional and highly qualified staff is being trained. Thus, during 2007-2018 15 PhD theses have been defended at the ICS Department, including 13 PhD and 2 doctoral ones.

In 2009 the department with the Ukrainian Lingua-Information Fund of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine established the Research Centre for Intelligent Systems and Applied Linguistics. The Centre, as a division of NTU “KhPI”, has been designed to improve the efficiency of research and development through the integration of scientific higher education and state academic research organizations.

The great attention of the department is paid to scientific work with students as well as vocational guidance work.

Since 2009, the department has been holding the annual Ukrainian scientific and practical student conference on Intelligent Systems and Applied Linguistics.

The purpose of the conference is a discussion of the development of applied linguistics; trends in the development of intelligent computer systems; and the promotion of talented young people in science.

Our students have repeatedly won in Kharkiv and Ukrainian Olympiads and various competitions. The graduates, Anastasia Doroshenko, Svitlana Petrasova, Alina Khailo, Ksenia Koniaieva, Yulia Tsibizova, Vitalii Tereshchenko, Silvette Luda Erika, Catherine Kislaya, and many others left their marks in the history of the department.

The Intelligent Computer Systems Department establishes vast international relationships with foreign universities. Thus, Bilateral Cooperation Agreements have been signed with such universities as Linnaeus University (Sweden); and L’Universite de Lyon (France). Negotiations are being conducted now with several universities in Germany, Austria, Poland, and Bulgaria.

In 2013/2014 a Peace Corps Volunteer from the United States, Margaret Houel worked at the Department.

The high scientific and intellectual potential of the department allows it to overcome all the difficulties of the present stage of development of the country and look forward with confidence.
