A team of NTU «KhPI» scientists became speakers of the summer remote session «STEM-school – 2023». NTU «KhPI» was represented by experienced experts in the field of STEM education: associate professors Serhii Petrov, Kseniia Minakova, and Dmytro Danylchenko, who conducted master classes «Kahoot – learn by playing!». The STEM School brought together 2400 teachers from all over Ukraine. More than thirty speakers shared their ideas, experience, and practical cases of teaching materials. The event was organized by the Institute for the Modernization of Education Content in cooperation with NTU «KhPI» and Osvita Publishing House.
Within the framework of the All-Ukrainian STEM School, scientists of Kharkiv Polytechnic organized a workshop «Kahoot – Learn by Playing!» which was aimed at improving the skills of teachers in the field of STEM education. The speakers were Serhii Petrov, associate professor of the Department of Organic Synthesis and Pharmaceutical Technologies of the Educational and Science Institute in Chemical Technologies and Engineering, Kseniia Minakova, associate professor of the Department of Physics of the Educational and Science Institute of Computer Modeling, Applied Physics and Mathematics, promoter of STEM education in Ukraine, and Dmytro Danylchenko, associate professor of the Department of Electric Power Transmission of the Institute of Education and Science in Power Engineering, Electronics and Electromechanics. They shared ideas, experience, and practical cases on topical issues of STEM education development in Ukraine, as well as hard skills and the use of digital resources to organize practice-oriented STEM education.
Thus, in the first module of the session, the participants obtained theoretical knowledge about digital tools for organizing STEM education; learned about the capabilities of the Kahoot platform, its use for creating interactive tasks and quizzes, and its integration into the educational process.
In the second module, under the guidance of speakers from Kharkiv Polytechnic, the participants received practical advice and recommendations on how to create effective interactive tasks to enhance the learning process and develop students’ critical thinking, and received a «homework» to develop their own Kahoot quizzes on their specialized subjects. More than 100 teachers took part in this task and developed their own Kahoots in the subjects they teach at school. The authors of the seven best Kahoot quizzes received incentive prizes from NTU «KhPI». Everyone who completed the additional task from the Kharkiv Polytechnic team also received additional certificates for three academic hours from NTU «KhPI».
«STEM education is one of the priority areas for the development of Ukrainian education. For teachers, the Summer STEM School was a unique opportunity to learn about current trends in STEM education and obtain practical skills in using digital tools to organize practice-oriented STEM education» said in his speech Yevgen Bazhenkov, director of the Institute for Modernization of Education Content.
The participants of the summer STEM school noted the relevance and practicality of the information received, as well as the high level of workshops. «I received a lot of useful information and practical skills! I especially liked the task of developing a Kahoot quiz organized by the speakers of Kharkiv Polytechnic. It is an interesting and effective way to engage students and make the learning fun» shared her impression of the summer distance session Marina Grykun, a biology teacher from Brovary, Kyiv region.
Note:
The Summer STEM School is one of the projects implemented under the Strategy for the Development of STEM Education in Ukraine for 2021-2030. The school aims to improve the skills of teachers, develop STEM education in Ukraine, and prepare students for successful self-actualization in the modern world. The remote session of STEM School 2023 took place on August 15-22 and was organized by: Institute for Modernization of Education Content, University of Education Management of the National Academy of Pedagogical Sciences of Ukraine, National Technical University «Kharkiv Polytechnic Institute» and Osvita Publishing House. The session program included materials on topical issues of STEM education for teachers. These included scientific and methodological foundations for the development of STEM education in the context of the introduction of a new Ukrainian school; digital resources for STEM education; and partnerships for better results in the development of the STEM educational environment.
The abbreviation STEM is deciphered as «Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics». These directions are the basis of this educational method. At the same time, these disciplines are not studied separately, as usual, but in a complex. Practical application of acquired knowledge is of great importance. The child not only gets acquainted with new directions of development of exact sciences and engineering, but learns to implement what she (he) has learned in practice.
