Yevgen Sokol presented NTU «KhPI» at the authoritative conference of Times Higher Education

Rector of NTU «KhPI» professor Yevgen Sokol took part in the international conference LUMEN 2023, dedicated to the global problems of higher education. It was held in Serock (Poland). Within the framework of the forum, a discussion panel about Ukraine was organized, to which the heads of the best national universities represented in the World University Rankings 2024 were invited. As you know, Kharkiv Polytechnic has been included in this prestigious world ranking for five years in a row, occupying leading positions. The organizer of the conference, the author of the Times Higher Education ranking (UK), also held an award ceremony where the rector of NTU «Kharkiv Polytechnic Institute» received a diploma of classification in the World University Rankings 2024.

The LUMEN 2023 conference has become the ninth in a row, organized by the World University Rankings – British agency, Times Higher Education (THE). This event is a central place for discussions concerning the best practices of the higher education institutions management. During two days, the leaders of European universities discussed the problems of higher education: from artificial intelligence and changes in legislation to the use of international funds for the dynamic development of the higher education institutions. A special feature of this year’s LUMEN conference was the discussion panel «Reconstruction of the Ukrainian Education System». For the first time, it was attended by representatives of the top five universities in Ukraine, which are included in the World University Rankings 2024.

Reports and presentations were made by Volodymyr Buhrov, rector of Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv, Vitaliy Kukharsky, vice-rector of Ivan Franko National University of Lviv, Vasyl Karpusha, rector of Sumy State University, Tetiana Fesenko, professor of Kharkiv National University of Radio Electronics, and Yevgen Sokol, rector of the National Technical University «Kharkiv Polytechnic Institute».

«It is very important that Times Higher Education paid special attention to the development of education in Ukraine and gave the opportunity for the heads of the country’s leading universities to speak on this topic. For the first time, the Ukrainian language was heard at this conference: the section «Reconstruction of the Ukrainian Education System» was in Ukrainian with simultaneous translation into Polish and English,» said rector Yevgen Sokol.

The Ukrainian delegation was particularly interested in the presentation of the World University Rankings 2024 Methodology made by Lachyn Italmazova, commercial director of UK&Europe THE. She spoke about the demands that this ranking puts forward for higher education institutions in terms of further development. According to the rector of NTU «KhPI» Yevgen Sokol, the issues that are relevant for many universities, including Ukrainian ones, were discussed. Among them: the citation of scientific articles, the cooperation of business and education, the challenges of artificial intelligence, and forecasts for the development of the GPT field, which turns the views on many processes, including educational ones.

«The problems which were discussed at the LUMEN conference are really common. And the most important of them is the connection between business and education. A huge number of publications in the world’s scientific journals is, of course, great, but little of it can be an innovative product for business. When we at NTU «KhPI» develop such a movement as startups, we talk about the interaction of education, science and business. This is a real way to implement innovative ideas into life. We understand that we are moving synchronously with foreign universities, and this allows us to develop in a single common global space in the future,» noted Rector Yevgen Sokol.

Within the framework of the conference, the Times Higher Education representatives presented awards to the heads of leading Ukrainian universities. At the ceremony, rector of NTU «KhPI»  professor Yevgen Sokol received a diploma of classification in the prestigious World University Rankings 2024.
