Scientist of NTU «KhPI» is a participant of the prestigious international conference on Nuclear Energy

At the invitation of «National Nuclear Energy Generating Company «Energoatom», Professor Oleksandr Yefimov, Head of the Department of Steam Generator Construction of NTU «KhPI», took part in the International Conference «Nuclear Capabilities for the Country’s Development: Wartime and Postwar Reconstruction». The event brought together more than 200 people: representatives of the embassies of the United States of America and Sweden, government agencies, MPs of Ukraine, international partners of the NNEGC, scientists, the public, management and specialists of energy companies. The conference participants concluded that Ukraine needs to implement the plan to launch additional nuclear power units by 2050. This will enable our country not only to provide itself with environmentally friendly nuclear energy, but also to export it to Europe. It was also noted that Ukraine’s energy security and development can be achieved through promising scientific national and international research and high-quality training of domestic experts in the field of nuclear energy.

Professor Oleksandr Yefimov, Head of the Department of Steam Generator Construction of the Educational and Scientific Institute of Energy, Electronics and Electromechanics of NTU «KhPI», took part in the second International Conference «Nuclear Capabilities for the Country’s Development: Wartime and Postwar Reconstruction». The forum was dedicated to the prospects of nuclear energy development and decarbonization tools. An important issue discussed at the conference was related to the impact of science and the quality of personnel training on the development of the nuclear industry in Ukraine.

At three discussion panels: «Nuclear capabilities for the country’s development», «Nuclear energy – the basis for a carbon-free future», «International nuclear cooperation», the forum participants expressed their opinion concerning the leading role of nuclear energy as the basis for energy independence of our country.

Presentations were made by: acting Chairman of the Management Board of Energoatom, Petro Kotin; Member of the Supervisory Board of Energoatom, Tymofii Mylovanov; Member of the Parliament, Victoria Hryb; SNRIU Chairman, Oleh Korikov; Member of the Parliament, Serhii Nagornyak; Director of the Institute of Nuclear and Thermal Energy Yevgen Pysmennyi; Vice President of Holtec International Riaz Awan; Office Director and Energy Attaché S. Anderson, Department of Energy/National Nuclear Security Administration. In their speeches, the experts emphasized that despite the difficult conditions associated with russia’s war against Ukraine, it is nuclear power that provides Ukrainians with electricity and heat. Ukrainian nuclear energy is the second largest in Europe in terms of installed capacity. The leading position in this field is held by the French company EDF, the largest nuclear power plant operator in Europe. The conference participants expressed confidence that experts and authorities should focus on the implementation of the plan of NNEGC  «Energoatom»  of Ukraine to launch additional nuclear power units by 2050. This will enable our country not only to provide itself with environmentally friendly nuclear energy, but also to export it to Europe. It was also noted that Ukraine’s energy security and development can be achieved through promising scientific national and international research and high-quality training of domestic experts in the field of nuclear energy.

For many years, scientists and teachers of the Steam Generator Department of NTU «KhPI» have been successfully carrying out this kind of work and sharing their experience with participants of authoritative international forums.

Note:

The Second International Conference «Nuclear Capabilities for the Country’s Development: Wartime and Postwar Reconstruction» was held in Kyiv on 15 October 2024. The forum was attended by representatives of NNEGC «Energoatom», the US and Swedish embassies, government agencies, scientists, and members of the Ukrainian Parliament. The conference was dedicated to the prospects for the development of nuclear energy and decarbonization tools.
