The results of the annual Ukrainian National H-index Ranking 2026, which measures the scientific productivity of universities (citations and the number of research papers), have been released in Ukraine. According to the study, the National Technical University «KhPI» ranked among the TOP-10 higher education institutions and took «bronze» among Ukraine’s technical universities. A total of 163 domestic universities participated in the evaluation. The ranking is based on open bibliometric data and allows for the analysis and comparison of universities based on their actual scientific contributions. The Ukrainian National H-index Ranking 2026 was compiled by an international group of scientists from the United States, the United Kingdom, Ukraine, and other countries.
The Ukrainian National H-index Ranking is an independent scientometric study that evaluates Ukrainian higher education institutions based on their scientific impact. It is based on the Hirsch index (H-index)—an international metric that reflects not only the number of scientific publications but also the level of their citation within the academic community. The ranking is compiled using open bibliometric data and allows for the comparison of universities based on their actual scientific contributions.
According to the Ukrainian National H-index Ranking 2026, the TOP-10 most influential scientific institutions include universities in Kyiv, Kharkiv, Lviv, Sumy, Dnipro, and Odesa.
Although classical and medical higher education institutions dominate the 2026 ranking, NTU «KhPI» demonstrated high competitiveness and outperformed some universities in this category amid intense multidisciplinary competition. In particular, among Ukraine’s technical universities, Kharkiv Polytechnic ranked third, competing with the National Technical University «Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute» and Lviv Polytechnic National University. According to the results of the Ukrainian National H-index Ranking 2026, the National Technical University «KhPI» entered the TOP-10 Ukrainian universities (H-index: 66) among 163 higher education institutions participating in the ranking.
As a reminder, following the results of the 2025 state accreditation conducted by the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine, NTU «KhPI» ranked first among 78 higher education institutions in Ukraine in the field of engineering and technology and received the highest «A» category.
Note:
The National H-index Ranking (Ukrainian National H-index Ranking) is an international, non-commercial ranking that evaluates the scientific productivity of universities and research organizations based on the Hirsch index (H-index). The ranking is compiled using open bibliometric data (Scopus, Web of Science, Google Scholar) and enables the comparison of scientific institutions within the country using a unified methodology. Its goal is to increase the transparency and objectivity of the evaluation of scientific activity.
The Hirsch index (h-index) is a scientometric metric that evaluates a researcher’s productivity based on the number of their publications and the number of citations they receive. It is equal to h if a researcher has h articles, each of which has been cited at least h times. This is an objective criterion for assessing scientific impact, developed in 2005.
The National Technical University «Kharkiv Polytechnic Institute» is one of Ukraine’s leading and largest technical universities, founded in 1885. Today, NTU «KhPI» comprises 11 academic and research institutes and 103 departments, with over 15.000 students enrolled. Kharkiv Polytechnic is among the top 5 universities in Ukraine and ranks highly among domestic higher education institutions in prestigious international rankings. In 2010, NTU «KhPI» attained the status of a national research university.
