About Department
The Department of Humanities has started working since 1973. The Department is headed by candidate of philosophical sciences associate Professor Nadiia Severyn. The staff of the Department includes 2 professors, 3 associate professors, 6 senior teachers, and 2 teachers. The Department of Humanities provides training in the Russian language for students of engineering, medical, biological, economic, and humanitarian profiles of study. The Department employs highly qualified specialists, most of whom have taught Russian in different countries of the world – in Austria, Great Britain, Sweden, Spain, Italy, Syria, Sri Lanka, Mongolia, Algeria, Afghanistan, Guinea, Sudan, Cuba, and Madagascar. The teachers of the Department have written textbooks and teaching aids, used in practical teaching by preparatory faculties of Ukraine, Russia, and Belarus. Over the past 10 years, the teachers of the Department have written and published more than 50 textbooks and teaching aids, 4 monographs, prepared 4 distance courses. Over the years, the Department of Humanities has taught during the summer language courses students from Italy, Spain, Greece, Great Britain, Korea, Turkey, and the USA. As part of an agreement with the University of Klagenfurt (Austria), since 1993, the Department annually accepts students from different Austrian universities for summer language practice.
Beginning with 2019/2020 academic year, the teaching staff of the department have started pre-university training of international students in the new discipline “Language of vocational training (English)”. Teaching is carried out according to the latest pedagogical technologies using original teaching materials in a blended learning system: in addition to regular classroom sessions with experienced qualified teachers, students gain access to a specially designed interactive online platform www.oup.com while working in computer classes, where they have the opportunity to perform additional lexical and grammatical tasks, repeat the material studied, take tests, etc.
In accordance with the modern requirements, an experts’ group of the Department of Humanities (prof. T.A. Snegurova, assoc. prof. Yu.A. Romanov, and senior teacher V.Yu. Paramonova) developed 2 distance courses in Russian as a foreign language – “Debut” and “Debut 1” – for English-speaking international students. The content of the courses corresponds to levels A2 and B1 respectively – according to the language descriptor of the Council of Europe. The distant courses were developed on the platform of the National Technical University “Kharkiv Polytechnic Institute” in Moodle environment. The courses have received the relevant certificates of NTU “KhPI” and are widely used in the educational process. Traditions and innovations are key elements of the activities of the Department of Humanities of International Education Faculty of NTU “KhPI”.
The Department of Humanities pays special attention to the leisure time of foreign students: give tours around the city, the ecopark, organizes visiting theaters, museums, exhibitions; together with the Department of Physical Education organizes sports competitions among foreign students. The tradition of the Department is the preparation and holding of student concerts, in which foreign students demonstrate not only the knowledge of Russian, Ukrainian, and English, but also their talents.
