Scientists of NTU «KhPI»: Ruslan Kryvobok, Head of Scientific and Research Part of NTU «KhPI», and his deputy Artem Zakharov took part in the investment forum «Kharkiv: Restart», dedicated to the development of ways of sustainable recovery and development of Kharkiv. They presented a comprehensive multidisciplinary project developed by the team of the Kharkiv Polytechnic Institute – «Kharkiv Energy Efficient». It is aimed at the active use of wind and solar energy with appropriate installations; glow-in-the-dark paving slabs; heat stations with plate heat exchangers; regulated electric drive in the public utilities sector; heat pumps, a significant reduction in carbon dioxide, etc. The project will significantly save heat energy in the city and is aimed at providing of the sustainable Kharkiv development in its post-war reconstruction.
The project of the National Technical University «KhPI» «Kharkiv Energy Efficient» united the efforts of thousands of academic staff, scientists, students and postgraduates to provide scientific, scientific and technical support for the strategy of energy efficient Kharkiv.
In particular, it provides for:
- The use of wind energy with appropriate installations, for example, within landfills and the ring road;
- Use of solar energy with appropriate installations on the main streets of Kharkiv;
- Widespread introduction of glow-in-the-dark paving slabs in the city, primarily in Northern Saltivka;
- Widespread use of heat stations with plate heat exchangers, which saves about 20% of heat energy;
- Widespread use of regulated electric drive in public utilities: subway, water supply pumps, water treatment plants in Dikanivka, etc.;
- Widespread use of heat pumps in the city’s energy supply, which will save up to 40-50% of heat energy;
- Electric transport;
- Turboexpanded technologies of autonomous sources of electric energy.
To provide high energy efficiency, scientists of Kharkiv Polytechnic propose to implement the pinch analysis to optimise of heating networks with their subsequent modernization, etc. In addition, the project provides the measures for significantly reducing of carbon dioxide (CO2) within the Kharkiv city and creating of three priority zones with CO2-neutral sites and high energy efficiency: Kharkiv city Centre, Northern Saltivka and Kharkiv Polytechnic Campus.
The authors of the Kharkiv Polytechnic project say: «The main value of every city is its people, and the main value of a modern city with many innovations is qualified, educated citizens, which is what NTU «KhPI» and other higher education institutions are working on. No wonder, Kharkiv is also a city of students, as our government officials and parliamentarians have repeatedly emphasized. Science and education are the basis of the present and future of Kharkiv and Ukraine in general, so our universities need support. Young people need to know that here is stability and opportunity for growth, and they have a place to come back to».
