NTU «KhPI» remains the Ukrainian flagship of THE WUR 2024 international rating

For the fifth year in a row, NTU «Kharkiv Polytechnic Institute» is included in the list of the best universities in the world according to the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2024. This is stated in the new edition of the ranking. Kharkiv Polytechnic was ranked 1201–1500 in the world and 4th place among Ukrainian higher education institutions. This year, the number of universities included in the general ranking has increased to 1904, they represent one hundred and eight countries of the world. 14 of them are from Ukraine.

The ranking is based on 17 indicators that measure the effectiveness of the university’s work in five major areas: teaching, research environment, quality of research, international perspectives, cooperation with industry. Most important are scientific reputation, citation impact, and teaching authority.

The TOP of Ukrainian universities looks like this:

  • Sumy State University — place 401-500;
  • Lviv Polytechnic National University — place 601-800;
  • Kharkiv National University of Radio Electronics — place 1001-1200;
  • NTU «Kharkiv Polytechnic Institute»— place 1201-1500;
  • The Ivan Franko National University of Lviv — place 1201-1500;
  • National Aerospace University «Kharkiv Aviation Institute» — place 1201-1500;
  • National Technical University of Ukraine «Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute» — place 1201-1500;
  • Oles Honchar Dnipro National University — place 1201-1500;
  • Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv — place 1201-1500;
  • N. Karazin Kharkiv National University – place 1201-1500
  • Yuri Fedkovich Chernivtsi National University — place 1201-1500;
  • National Aviation University — 1501+
  • National University of Life and Environmental Sciences of Ukraine — 1501+;
  • Uzhhorod National University — 1501+.

It should be noted that NTU «KhPI» improved some indicators, which led to an increase in its overall ranking.

In particular, if we analyze the results of the ranking for Eastern Europe, which is represented by 104 universities from 8 countries, Kharkiv Polytechnic ranks 25-47 place.

World University Rankings from the British agency Times Higher Education is the largest and most diverse global ranking of universities today. Together with the Shanghai ranking and QS, it is considered one of the most authoritative in the world. The table of evaluation criteria includes 17 indicators (the number increased by 4 points), which measure the effectiveness of the university’s work in five major areas: teaching, research environment, quality of research, international perspectives, cooperation with industry. The following indicators are the most important: reputation of teaching — 15%; scientific reputation — 18%; citation impact — 15%.

This year, the number of higher education institutions that submitted their data for consideration increased to 2673, including 42 from Ukraine (14 more than last year). The final list, after analyzing the activities, included 1904 higher education institutions from 108 countries, 14 of them are Ukrainian.

The best universities in the world according to Times Higher Education in 2024 became: Oxford University, Stanford University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Harvard University, Cambridge University, Princeton University, California Institute of Technology, Imperial College London, University of California (Berkeley), Yale University.
