NTU «KhPI» signed a Memorandum of Cooperation with the Interregional Center for Humanitarian Demining and Rapid Response of the State Emergency Service of Ukraine (SES). The document provides for joint educational and outreach activities, scientific research, testing, and practical evaluation of innovative technologies and technical equipment for humanitarian demining. During the meeting, researchers from NTU «KhPI» presented their developments in the fields of robotics, automation, artificial intelligence, computer vision, and digital technologies. These include remotely controlled robotic systems for operating in hazardous conditions, information and analytical platforms, risk modeling and assessment technologies, as well as modern engineering solutions and additive technologies. The collaboration between NTU «KhPI» and the SES is aimed at implementing scientific developments into practice and enhancing the safety of humanitarian demining operations.
On August 25, 2025, a meeting was held between representatives of the National Technical University «KhPI» and the Interregional Center for Humanitarian Demining and Rapid Response of the State Emergency Service of Ukraine, during which a Memorandum of Cooperation was signed. The event was attended by the acting rector of NTU «KhPI» Professor Galyna Tymchenko; the vice rector for scientific and pedagogical work, Professor Oleksiy Larin; and the head of the Interregional Center, Colonel of the Civil Protection Service Serhiy Ivanov. Representatives from relevant departments and research units at NTU «KhPI»—working in the fields of robotics, unmanned technologies, artificial intelligence, modeling, materials science, and testing of technical equipment—also joined the discussion.
«This isn’t just about educational and outreach activities. We are ready to participate in research in the field of humanitarian demining and civil protection, as well as in testing and implementing innovative solutions. NTU «KhPI» has expertise in robotics, drone technologies, and engineering support that could be useful to the Center for Humanitarian Demining and Rapid Response of the State Emergency Service of Ukraine. «It is important to combine the university’s educational and scientific-technical potential with the State Emergency Service’s practical experience within the framework of further cooperation and grant initiatives,» noted Oleksiy Larin. Representatives from relevant departments, institutes, and research units at NTU «KhPI» demonstrated the practical aspect of this collaboration by presenting specific developments and technologies. In particular, the Department of Occupational and environmental safety presented its educational activities and achievements in the field of civil protection. The Department of Automation and Control in Technical Systems demonstrated robotic complexes and remote control systems, including small wheeled robotic platforms. Specialists from the Department of Mathematical Modeling and Intelligent Computation in Engineering and the Department of Computer Modeling of Processes and Systems discussed UAVs, as well as the application of artificial intelligence and computer vision for hum anitarian demining, while the Department of Ceramic, Refractory, Glass, and Enamel Technologies discussed specialized materials and technologies for technical demining equipment. Separate attention was given to the testing facilities, virtual reality technologies, and simulators available at KhPI, which can be used for modeling, researching, and testing technical solutions.
The memorandum lays the foundation for further cooperation, including joint research, testing, and practical evaluation of innovative technical solutions. Summing up the meeting, Serhiy Ivanov noted: «For the Kharkiv region, humanitarian demining is, first and foremost, a matter of human safety. It is important to combine the practical experience of deminers with the capabilities of science and technology to help specialists work more effectively and, most importantly, more safely. This is precisely where we see the practical value of our cooperation with NTU «Kharkiv Polytechnic Institute.»
