NTU «Kharkiv Polytechnic Institute» expands cooperation with Wrocław

Researchers from the Institute of Energy, Electronics, and Electromechanics at the National Technical University «Kharkiv Polytechnic Institute» (NTU «KhPI») paid a working visit to the Wrocław University of Science and Technology (Politechnika Wrocławska, Poland). The main outcome of the meeting was the signing of a memorandum of cooperation in the fields of thermal power engineering, cryogenics, refrigeration and air conditioning technology, as well as renewable energy. The goal of the partnership is to implement scientific developments into actual production and to create environmentally friendly technologies in the energy sector. During their stay in Wrocław, the Kharkiv scientists familiarized themselves with the work of modern educational and research laboratories at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Energy. The specialists from NTU «KhPI» were particularly impressed by the university’s modern educational hub, where theoretical knowledge is transformed into practical skills for creating complex energy systems.

The visit by the NTU «Kharkiv Polytechnic Institute» delegation to the Wroclaw University of Science and Technology began with a tour of the modern facilities and equipment at the Polish institution of higher education. Professor Bartosz Zayonczkowski, Associate Dean for Cooperation and Research, led a detailed tour of the research facilities at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Energy of the Polish university. Representatives of the Educational and Scientific Institute of Energy, Electronics, and Electromechanics at NTU «KhPI»—Professor Mykola Kundenko, Head of the Department of Thermal Engineering and Energy-Efficient Technologies, and Professor Vadim Starikov, Head of the Department of refrigeration, cryogenic, and climatic technology—visited key locations within the faculty:

  • educational and training centers: laboratories for fundamental metrology and experimental methods, as well as refrigeration technology and heat pumps;
  • research complex: laboratories for the intensification of multiphase processes, cryogenics, and gas technologies;
  • specialized facilities for ecology and automation: laboratories for testing equipment and exhaust gas purification processes, as well as laboratories for control systems, measurements, and automation of industrial processes;
  • technology center with laboratories for separation of solutions and suspensions.

The university’s modern educational hub made a particular impression on the Kharkiv researchers. Its laboratories are frequently used as testing grounds for engineering solutions commissioned by energy companies. This approach allows students to work with state-of-the-art equipment and participate in the implementation of innovative technologies while still in school. Research at the faculty focuses, in particular, on the creation of highly efficient heat exchangers and combined energy production systems, as well as on the design of complex refrigeration complexes and microclimate systems

A key outcome of the visit became the signing of a memorandum of cooperation between the National Technical University «Kharkiv Polytechnic Institute» and the Wrocław University of Science and Technology. The document outlines the expansion of the partnership in the fields of thermal power engineering, refrigeration and air-conditioning technology, energy-efficient technologies, and the development of modern engineering education. The agreements cover the implementation of joint educational and scientific projects, the organization of scientific seminars and conferences, participation in international research programs, as well as the development of academic mobility for students and faculty.

Note:

Wrocław University of Science and Technology (Politechnika Wrocławska) is one of Poland’s leading technical universities. Founded in 1945, the university currently has over 23,000 students and approximately 2,000 faculty members across 14 faculties. It consistently ranks among the top three technical universities in the country and is a leader in the number of patents. The university actively collaborates with international corporations, including Google, Microsoft, Volvo, and others. This interaction with the business sector enables the implementation of the Industrial Doctorate model, under which research is funded by the private sector. The university’s leading areas of activity are innovative energy, IT technologies, architecture, microsystems, and modern mechanical engineering. Its research infrastructure is considered one of the most robust in Central Europe.

The National Technical University «Kharkiv Polytechnic Institute» is one of Ukraine’s leading and largest technical universities, founded in 1885. Today, NTU «KhPI» comprises 11 academic and research institutes and 103 departments, with over 15,000 students enrolled. Kharkiv Polytechnic ranks among the TOP-5 universities in Ukraine and holds leading positions among domestic higher education institutions in prestigious international rankings. In 2010, NTU «KhPI» attained the status of a national research university. In 2022, the unique IT specialist training program Innovation Campus at NTU «Kharkiv Polytechnic Institute» was awarded a global «silver» in the field of education. According to the results of the state accreditation by the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine in 2025, NTU «KhPI» ranked first among 78 domestic higher education institutions in the engineering and technology field, receiving an «A» rating, and entered the TOP-5 Ukrainian universities in the natural sciences and mathematics category.
