Sixteen students from the National Technical University «KhPI» took part in one of the world’s largest student IT tournaments—the IEEEXtreme 19.0 international hackathon. The online competition brought together thousands of participants from over 70 countries. The goal of the tournament was to test participants’ knowledge of programming, algorithms, logic, and teamwork skills under time constraints. Over the course of 24 hours, participants continuously solved problems of varying difficulty levels in a remote format. Based on the hackathon results, the students from NTU «KhPI» received international certificates.
This spring, NTU «KhPI» participated in the international hackathon IEEEXtreme 19.0—one of the world’s largest student IT competitions. The event brought together thousands of future engineers and programmers from over 70 countries. Six universities from Ukraine participated in the competition. The main goal of the competition was to test knowledge of algorithms, analytics, and programming, as well as the ability to work cohesively under time constraints. The tournament was held remotely and brought together participants from different cities and countries. Over the course of 24 hours, the teams worked in real time, maintaining a consistent pace despite fatigue and time zone differences. Contestants completed dozens of tasks of varying difficulty, demonstrating their ability to collaborate effectively as a team.
The teams included students at various levels—from undergraduate to graduate programs—at the Educational and Scientific Institute of Computer Science and Information Technologies at the NTU «Kharkiv Polytechnic Institute» (NTU «KhPI»), representing the following departments:
- Multimedia and Internet Technologies and Systems (MITS);
- Computer Mathematics and Data Analysis (CMDA);
- Computer Engineering and Programming (CEP);
- Software Engineering and Management Intelligent Technologies (SEMIT).
The preparatory phase took place on the CSAcademy online platform, where participants honed their skills on problems of international difficulty. Kharkiv Polytechnic Institute was represented at the hackathon by Mykyta Nosenko, Dmytro Kozyuk, Pavlo Pasko, Ivan Kharkivskyi, Sofiia Lytvynenko, Dmytro Kazakov, Kyrylo Kolomiets, Vladyslav Vlasenko, Oleksandr Fedorov, Bohdan Fedorchak, Igor Oliinyk, Olga Sukhomlina, Viktoria Luchko, Igor Shvets, Bohdan Yakylevskyi, and Maksym Kopychko.
Organizational support was provided by proctors and mentors: Hanna Zavolodko, Mykola Aslandukov, Svitlana Gavrylenko, and Andriy Statkus. They coordinated the process, ensured compliance with the rules, and supported the contestants throughout the intellectual competition. Based on their performance, representatives of the NTU «Kharkiv Polytechnic Institute» received international certificates.
Note:
IEEEXtreme has been held annually since 2006 in an online format. Its goal is to combine learning with gaming, expand professional programming skills, and spark students’ interest in complex interdisciplinary challenges. The tournament lasts 24 hours, during which participants compete against one another by solving programming challenges.
To register and participate in the competition, you must be a member of IEEE—the world’s largest technical professional organization dedicated to advancing technology. In addition, each team must have at least one proctor (observer) who is an IEEE member at a higher level than the participants to oversee the competition process. NTU «KhPI» has been participating in the IEEEXtreme international hackathon for the fifth consecutive year.
