A Ukrainian-Italian project for the restoration of the NTU «KhPI» Sports Complex has been developed

The project for the restoration of the Kharkiv Polytechnic’s Sports Complex was included in the book «Design for Peace». It was created by a well-known Ukrainian designer Iryna Orekhva and specialists of the Italian company «Di Girolamo Engineering» under the leadership of Nadia Peruggi. Thus, a 3D model of the building was developed, which includes the design of the sports arena, swimming pool and the surrounding area of the Sports Complex of NTU «KhPI». In addition, the reconstruction of sports grounds, zoning of places for sports training, education and recreation are foreseen. The project was launched during a specialized workshop organized by the «Design for Peace» platform at Kharkiv Polytechnic.  We would like to remind you that the Sports Complex of NTU «KhPI» was damaged as a result of a rocket attack by the russian federation on the night of 24 June 2022, the game hall and the arena were completely destroyed.

The consequences of the destruction of the Sports Complex of NTU «KhPI» due to the enemy attack of the russian federation on the night of 24 June 2022 did not leave indifferent not only Kharkiv Polytechnics, the sports community of Ukraine, but also ordinary citizens of many countries. Famous Ukrainian designer Iryna Orekhva and specialists from the Italian company «Di Girolamo Engineering», led by Nadia Peruggi, have developed a design project that will allow the restoration of the Sports Complex of the Kharkiv Polytechnic Institute. The work on it began during a specialized workshop organized by the «Design for Peace» platform at Kharkiv Polytechnic. Thus, a 3D model of the Sports Complex was developed, which includes the design of the sports arena, swimming pool and the surrounding area of the NTU «KhPI» Sports Complex.  In addition, the reconstruction of sports grounds, zoning of places for sports training, education and recreation are foreseen.

Implementation of the «Design for Peace» charity project was supported by the Italian government. It became a bright example of assistance to professional architects from Ukraine who were forced to leave for other countries during the war. The National Council of Architects, Designers, Landscape Designers of Italy and the Order of Architects PPC of Rome, Council of Ministers organized and funded a training seminar and five workshops for refugees that lasted eight months in different studios. Each workshop focused on only one type of public building, selected by the Ukrainian Embassy in Italy as the most damaged. Reconstruction of the destroyed infrastructure will begin after the war.

The design project for the restoration of the Sports Complex of NTU «KhPI» was included into the book «Design for Peace», which also presents variants of a new vision for the Faculty of Economics of V.N. Karazin Kharkiv National University, H.S. Skovoroda Kharkiv National  Pedagogical University, and the destroyed buildings of Mykolayiv and Korosten.

Note:

The Sports Complex «Polytech» was built in 1985-1991 (total area 8602 square meters). It is the only sports facility in Ukraine that was awarded the State Prize in the field of Architecture and has the status of «Olympic Training Base for Ukrainian National Teams». The Ukrainian national basketball, badminton, athletics and other sports teams trained here, students of the Physical Education and Sports specialty attended classes, world and European champions and Olympic medalists studied here, and numerous sports and recreational events took place: Spartakiad, contests and competitions of international level, as well as Open Days. The unique building in the center of Kharkiv gathered  around of it all those who are in love with movement, sports and development.

On the night of 24 June 2022, the Sports Complex «Polytech» was destroyed by russian missile attack. The main blow fell on the athletics arena and the game hall. The blast wave damaged the swimming pool and all the premises of the Sports Complex: windows, doors, and walls. Despite the significant destruction and lack of money, Polytechnic students, alumni and their friends, and athletes united: they cleared the rubble, took out glass and debris, and stacked bricks. After a while, restoration and repair work began. On 1 June 2023, NTU «KhPI» opened a renovated swimming pool in the Sports Complex and a part of the building that was not so damaged by the missile strikes – the building of the Department of Physical Education was renovated, and was fenced off from the damaged athletics arena and the game hall by a wall.
